Cruising Through Cuba's Past and Present (Featured in Huffington Post)

If the U.S. and Cuba had to choose from a drop-down menu to describe their relationship, it’s no question which one it would be. That’s right: “It’s complicated.” And while the strained ties are gradually beginning to ease — with the last couple years even seeing the reopening of commercial flights and embassies between the two countries — the stigma of traveling from America to the “forbidden” island still lingers. Not letting this deter her, budding documentary journalist Morgan Lieberman traveled to Cuba to photograph the island and form her own opinions instead. Through her images, she offers a fresh look at the vibrant and textured charm of the Caribbean country both proud of its past and confident in its future.

Greetings from Liberland: Europe's Virtual Utopia

One step forward, two steps back: The life of a politician often resembles a retrogressive line dance with policy taking the lead over progress. But what if instead of trying to enact change within the rhythm of an already established government, one created an entirely new nation instead?  As photojournalist David Tesinsky shows us, that’s exactly what Vit Jedlicka did two years ago when he planted a flag on a tiny piece of land wedged between Serbia and Croatia and called it Liberland. Built around the idea of having crypto-currency and a virtual embassy, the country sounds more like a sci-fi film than a newly established state. Yet, as it celebrates its second year of existence with over half a million citizens and 90 representative offices globally, Liberland is sending a message to the world that it is not only a reality, but that it has every plan of dancing to its own beat.

The Yin and Yang of Modern Day Mongolia

While Ulaanbaatar’s smoggy skies, intense traffic and rows of Soviet-era apartments paint one picture of Mongolia, all it takes is hopping on a train to experience an entirely different scene. Rugged mountains, expansive blue skies and vast rolling hills fill the countryside, offering yin to the capital city’s yang. From hipsters to herders, the urban and rural populations hold an intricate balance of co-existing as opposites and allies. Yet as photojournalist Jeremy Lock shows us, recent developments in the country have not only created a rapid change in its economy but also a growing shift in its cultural equipoise.

Finding Humanity in a Hurricane: Haiti Revisited

It may sound odd to feel a connection with a storm, especially one that wreaked as much havoc as Hurricane Matthew. But then again, how many of us can say we were taking shelter in a tiny Caribbean island during its wrath? For American photojournalist Alex McDougall, the whim of weather patterns is what shifted his fate as he sailed off Nicaragua’s coast to document small island fishing communities. While the height of the storm never reached him, he still felt obligated to photograph its damage in the region. Traveling to Haiti months later, McDougall not only covered the impact of the hurricane, but also the resilience of the Haitian people.

Shifting the Paradigm in Ethiopia

Sustainability, women’s rights, equal access to healthcare and education. In the fast-paced Western world, these social issues still circle the wheel. But in a small, quiet village in northern Ethiopia, the paradigm has already shifted. Welcome to Awra Amba: a peaceful, egalitarian community formed less than 50 years ago by a group of like-minded farmers. Capturing the essence of harmony, photojournalist Omer Burin takes us inside the village where gender equality is the norm and collective well-being is the ultimate priority.
